{"id":100,"date":"2012-05-21T10:24:09","date_gmt":"2012-05-21T14:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/faculty.wcu.edu\/mkbauer\/?page_id=100"},"modified":"2015-02-27T14:42:42","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T19:42:42","slug":"junior-recital-bm-performance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/faculty.wcu.edu\/mkbauer\/faculty-name\/curriculum-vita\/junior-recital-bm-performance\/","title":{"rendered":"Junior Recital &#8211; BM Performance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>MUS 305 &#8211; JUNIOR RECITAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">BM Performance Majors<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0 The performance must include representative works from the following five categories:<\/p>\n<p>a) 17th or 18th-century Italian or English<\/p>\n<p>b) 19th-century German<\/p>\n<p>c) 19th or 20th-century French<\/p>\n<p>d) 20th-century American or British<\/p>\n<p>e) an aria from an opera or oratorio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<\/strong>. The student must perform in French, German, Italian, and English.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0All literature for this program must be approved by the voice faculty\u00a0<strong><em>at least\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>10 weeks prior to the hearing date.\u00a0 Any changes in literature must be immediately approved by the applied teacher and the voice committee members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>\u00a0The length of this program must total no less than 25 minutes of memorized music.<\/p>\n<p>5<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Public performances may be scheduled at the 2:30 p.m. Friday Student recital hour or during any available evening (afternoons only on Saturday and Sunday).\u00a0 This must be scheduled by the applied instructor\u00a0<em>and will not be advertised or confirmed until the public performance is recommended by the hearing committee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>\u00a0One selection chosen by the committee must be prepared by the student, without the aid of instruction.\u00a0 This decision should be made prior to #3 (above).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong>\u00a0A Performance Portfolio (notebook) on the recital material is due\u00a0<em>absolutely no later than 1 week prior to the recital performance date<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>Failure to do so will result in lowering the grade one letter<\/strong>. The portfolio must be free of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and must include:<\/p>\n<p>a) clean copies of scores with measures numbered<\/p>\n<p>b) brief biographical information (1\/2 page maximum) for each composer with emphasis on the selections performed\u00a0or at least the genre<\/p>\n<p>c) word by word translations of each selection<\/p>\n<p>d) brief statements about stylistic interpretation with specific references to measures in the score<\/p>\n<p>e) brief pedagogical comments which include mention of technique and interpretation with specific references to measures in the score<\/p>\n<p>f) song translations for the public recital<\/p>\n<p>g) comments on poetry or poet where appropriate<\/p>\n<p>h) citations in MLA style, i.e. do not plagiarize<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong>\u00a0The public performance and performance portfolio will be graded by the voice faculty (MUS 305).\u00a0 A separate grade will be given for the 2 hour applied lesson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Additional Guidelines<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">for the Preparation of the Portfolios for MUS-305 and MUS-405<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0It is strongly recommended that a practice journal be maintained during the preparation of the recitals which require a portfolio. \u00a0Entries in this journal may include such things as: \u00a0technical challenges, technical solutions, practice time on task, diction comments, listening comments, personal notes, etc. \u00a0Maintaining these and other notes will make the construction of your portfolio much easier.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 The length of each entry should be about one and one-half to two pages.\u00a0 This gives you enough room to write in some detail without writing a novel.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 When making technique comments, you should reference your detailed practice journal entries.\u00a0 The information contained in this journal will be invaluable and readily accessible for the portfolio.\u00a0 Cite specific vocal challenges you encountered while studying your literature (<em>e.g., passaggio<\/em>, breath intake and management, the use of vocal shadings\/coloring of the voice for dramatic effect, register issues,\u00a0<em>etc.<\/em>). Detail what you did, or tried to do, to fix any problematic areas.\u00a0 Were the problems solved, or partially solved?\u00a0 If not totally solved, which part showed improvement and what was your strategy for fixing the rest?\u00a0 In other words, provide some detail in your discussion.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Please ensure that your biographical information contains the items listed below.\u00a0 Writing this should give you about one page or so of biographical information.<\/p>\n<p>The following is to be included in your biographical commentary:<\/p>\n<p>a. dates and a paragraph about the composer\/poet or librettist\u2019s life;<\/p>\n<p>b. a paragraph about his\/her historical significance to the music you are \u00a0performing or to the vocal field in general;<\/p>\n<p>c. a paragraph or so on this composer and the genre presented (opera, song cycle,\u00a0song, musical theater,\u00a0<em>etc.<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MUS 305 &#8211; JUNIOR RECITAL BM Performance Majors &nbsp; &nbsp; 1.\u00a0 The performance must include representative works from the following five categories: a) 17th or 18th-century Italian or English b) 19th-century German c) 19th or 20th-century French d) 20th-century American or British e) an aria from an opera or oratorio. &nbsp; 2.
