singer\u2019s art;<\/li>\n<li>To improve healthy vocal technique through:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>1. a pedagogical understanding of the vocal apparatus;<\/p>\n<p>2. a systematic exercise regimen;<\/p>\n<p>3. appropriate, yet challenging repertory.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To demonstrate phonetic accuracy in up to four languages depending upon your degree program;<\/li>\n<li>To expressively communicate text and music in the<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>assigned repertory with appropriate stylistic choices;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To expand repertory through individual study and exposure to the literature of vocal students;<\/li>\n<li>To broaden knowledge and appreciation of vocal artistry through supplementary readings and listening assignments and by attending on campus vocal events as well as occasional off campus concerts;<\/li>\n<li>To prepare and perform a successful jury and\/or any other auditions or engagements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>II.\u00a0\u00a0How will your grade be determined<\/em><\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>The grade for your voice lessons will be determined by your work in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong><em>Jury<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0A jury is an adjudicated performance before the voice faculty.\u00a0\u00a0Students performing a Junior recital or senior recital\/hearing are not required to perform a jury in that semester.\u00a0\u00a0Sophomore Exams are performed during jury times, unless special permission is granted from the faculty.\u00a0 The dates for this semester\u2019s juries are: \u00a0Wednesday, December 13 .\u00a0 (The exact jury times on those days will be set later in the semester, based on the number of students needing to sing juries.\u00a0 Please set aside these general jury times in your calendars.)\u00a0 I<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Lessons<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0Voice majors &#8211; MM, BMED, BSED, BMApplied, BA (2 credit lessons) &#8211; receive one private 50 minute lesson once a week.\u00a0\u00a0BFA Musical Theatre majors (1 credit lessons) receive 1 private 30 minute lesson once a week.\u00a0\u00a0(See the link,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/paws.wcu.edu\/mkbauer\/voicenumber.htm\">What number to take when?<\/a>\u00a0for further information)\u00a0 All voice teachers will be grading each\u00a0 student on every lesson and using these grades to help determine the final score of each student.\u00a0 Students are required to be:\u00a0 1.\u00a0 On time for lessons, 2.\u00a0 prepared for lessons, 3.\u00a0 warmed up for lessons.\u00a0 Faculty have the option to deny a student a lesson for lack of preparation.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Performances<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0Each student must perform publicly throughout the semester regardless of degree and track.\u00a0\u00a0You may be asked to perform in the combined studio recitals, your professor\u2019s studio recitals or you may elect to perform in the many student recitals scheduled throughout the semester.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>Performing is critical for your growth as a singer.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0First semester freshmen and those students performing required degree recitals (sophomore exams, senior recitals, senior showcases, graduate recitals, etc.) may be excused from this performance requirement.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>ALL performances are memorized.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u00a0You are expected to dress appropriately for ALL performances.\u00a0\u00a0The number of performances is determined on an individual basis and every effort to set performance dates early will be made.\u00a0N.B.\u00a0\u00a0Program notes\/translations will not be provided for combined studio recitals.\u00a0\u00a0Students are required to orally provide the audience with brief program notes and\/or translations as part of their performance.\u00a0\u00a0This must also be memorized.\u00a0\u00a0 Each performance will be adjucidated by your teachers.\u00a0 Comments from these performances may be available to you.\u00a0 In most cases, student performances will be evaluated and graded by the voice faculty.\u00a0 These grades will form the basis of the performance component of the final grade.\u00a0 On Wednesday, December 7, at 8 p.m. there will be an &#8220;Honors Voice Recital&#8221; which will feature the singers who consistently score high marks throughout the semester.\u00a0 Consideration for scores will include: preparation, attitude, professionalism (including working with your pianist), polish and progress, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Written Work<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0You are required to turn in research on your assigned literature.\u00a0\u00a0Use the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/paws.wcu.edu\/mkbauer\/fall09VoiceLiteratureResearchSheet.htm\">Voice Literature Research Sheet<\/a>\u00a0for classical music and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/paws.wcu.edu\/mkbauer\/CharacterQuestionnaire_000.htm\">Character Questionnaire<\/a>\u00a0for Musical Theatre Literature.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Repertoire sheets are due two weeks after the song has been assigned.\u00a0 You can expect that your teacher will finish assigning songs by mid semester.\u00a0 No written work will be accepted after the two week mark.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Coaching<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0No coaching is available this semester to any student.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Attendance<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0You are\u00a0<strong>REQUIRED<\/strong>\u00a0to attend your private lesson AND weekly principals classes each week.\u00a0If, for some reason, you are unable to attend either of these classes,\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>you must let your applied professor know no later than 24 hours in advance<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 It is unprofessional to not show up for a lessons.\u00a0 Professors will factor such behavior into your final grade.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0In addition, voice students are required to attend\u00a0 other vocal performances\u00a0this semester, i.e. studio recitals (other than your own), Sophomore Exams, Junior Qualifying Performances, Visiting Artists, Faculty Voice Recitals, Faculty Showcase Recitals and Music Theatre Productions.\u00a0 You are also strongly encouraged to\u00a0attend all Asheville Lyric Opera productions and any other regional vocal events.\u00a0 See the voice calendar for specific dates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong><em>Practice<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0You are required to practice a minimum of 1 hour 6 days a week.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>In order for you to make satisfactory progress, you must practice, practice, practice<\/strong><\/span><strong>!!!!!!!!!!!\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0In addition to learning songs and memorizing, commit some practice time every day to vocal muscle development\/coordination\/technique.\u00a0\u00a0Those who are preparing a degree performance will find 1 hour is not enough time.\u00a0\u00a0Make your practice time productive.\u00a0Have a goal for each hour.\u00a0\u00a0Use a notebook or practice log to record thoughts, problems, questions, ideas, etc.\u00a0Bring this notebook\/log to all lessons and practice sessions.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Memorization<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0All performances must be memorized.\u00a0\u00a0All pieces must be completely memorized 2 weeks before the end of the semester.\u00a0\u00a0Your professor will check memory during your lesson time during the week of:\u00a0 November 26 &#8211; 30.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Required Materials:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>In the interest of complying with copyright law, the voice faculty discourages the copying of music for lessons or performances.\u00a0 The faculty encourages
