Enthusiastic and driven academic professional with a diverse and rich professional and academic background of over 30 years. Global experience in several industries and academic environments. Nearly 20 years of academic experience as an assistant, associate and industrial professor.  Over 12 years of industrial experience primarily within the automotive industry as a leader, engineer and developer. Passionate about elevating the reputation and academic standing of Western Carolina University (WCU) in all fronts.   Demonstrated excellence in teaching, developing students and molding talent to achieve students’ academic and professional growth. Unwavering commitment to scholarly work and achievements with a vast history of patents, publications, and awards.

Devoted to significantly enhancing WCU capabilities and reach when it comes to scholarly, professional and community achievements.  Focused on achievements that engage and enable students to succeed both at WCU and in their careers. Despite having a teaching heavy role for the first two years (of three) at WCU, contributed the following major accomplishments:

  • Established and secured the following at WCU:
    • HAAS scholarship on a yearly basis

    • Official testing center for SME
    • Student chapter for SME
    • Green Belt Six Sigma Training Program in Palestine in coordination with the outreach department

Professional Experience

PROGRAM DIRECTOR, ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, AND PROFESSOR

WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY ● CULLOWHEE ● AUG 2020 – CURRENT

 Passionately teaching Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Technology courses. The past three years are highlighted by the following accomplishments:

  • Illustrious teaching background and unwavering dedication to the students and WCUs success:
  • Taught a total of 52 sections for 11 different courses (over 30 courses total at different institutions).
  • Course development and modification:
    • Developed a new graduate course – Operations Research.
    • Aligned:
      • Additive Manufacturing content with SME_AM certificate.
      • ET 425-Metrology and Reverse Engineering with ASME-GD&T certificate.
    • ET 420-Advanced Engineering Materials course content and lab and add a semester long to design and make an injection mold and part.
    • Modify the content of ME 211-Mechanical Engineering Lab I to include more experiments.
    • Develop an apparatus to study the behavior of cantilever structure and modify many experiments in ET 333 Strength of Materials Lab.
  • Excellence in professional service to WCU, students, community and the global profession:
    • Securing HAAS scholarship – $22,000/year
    • Established WCU as an official Testing Center for:
      • HAAS certification for our students and the region bringing continuous funding for the department ($150/certificate)
      • SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers)
    • Established a Waterjet certification.
    • Train the trainer certificate which enabled our School to be an official site for ACE (American Cutting Edge); (Received $2000).
    • Became ABET Evaluator
    • Student and Community Activities
      • Established the student chapter for SME, the most active student chapter in terms of members and activities.
      • Re-established the MSA (Muslim Student Association)
      • Currently supervising two graduate students.

TEAM LEAD – KNOWLEDGE BASED SYSTEMS

DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORP ● AUBURN HILLS, MI, USA ● AUG 2001 – AUG 2009

Managed a result driven software development team that produced different levels of quality software in terms of size and complexity. Leveraged key competencies and expertise in IDS training, ontology, engineering, and software to complete many projects that included product development, materials, substance of concern and recyclability.

  1. Knowledge based Recyclable Materials System (KRMS): Project lead: Patent has been granted (US6477517) for using ontology in managing the materials and vehicles data.
  2. Design Synthesis ontologies: coordinate and manage the creation of ontologies for the suspension system, chassis, body in white, fuel system, fasteners, powertrain, vehicle ontology, and KRMS materials ontology.
  3. Common Knowledge Based Engineering Framework (CKBEF): maintain OntoWorks ontology development tool and co-manage the changes and the users of the tool.
  4. KBS Support: Manage the MetaModel for the ontology authoring tool (OntoWorks).  Support users of ontology in Chrysler and help the introduction of ontology in new projects.
  5. SE&E for IMDS: Pollution Prevention material tracking system for Chrysler vehicles. Introduce a KBS for tracking SOC in all vehicle parts.

 

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST – KNOWLEDGE BASED SYSTEMS

Developed ontology systems and expert systems to help make designs more intelligent through the application of the latest theories. Avoiding changes in the design by considering the design guidelines, environmental & governmental requirements and regulations along with performance rules and cost targets up-front at the design stage.

PROJECT ENGINEER

MANNESMANN RAPISTAN SYSTEMS ● GRAND RAPIDS, USA ● AUG 1999 – JUL 2000

Configured and implemented Pick-to-Light Systems (RapidPick2) for a wide variety of automation and material handling applications.  Used a variety of software (C, C++ and Visual Basic) and hardware to achieve full commissioning at the customer site.

KNOWLEDGE BASED ENGINEER

FORD MOTOR CO ● DEARBORN, USA ● SEP 1997 – JUN 1999

Developed design advisors where the manufacturing and assembly design rules are implemented in the background of the CAD system.  This was achieved through the use of Pro-E and Ideas CAD systems – realized significant reduction in design time and improvements in design quality.  Awarded a patent – Knowledge Based Design Advisor for Instrument Panel Generation.

  • Manage the three programs in the department at the BSc. and the diploma level.

Scholarship and Creative Activities

Throughout my academic career, I was successful in securing many competitive project grants, as well as the supervision of over 40 undergraduate projects. My patent and publication record includes over 50 publications in international journals and conferences, in addition to several in the process of publication. I am an expert in the field of design and manufacturing. Furthermore, I have extensive experience in knowledge management, reliability, quality, and engineering management in general.  I gained this experience during over 12 years of working in the US industry most of which are in the automotive industry as well as the experience in academia which totals over 20 years.

  • Establishment of Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab (CIM Lab) at UAEU. State of the art computerized machines for manufacturing. This lab serves the whole college.
  • Upgrade the mechanical workshop at UAEU to be able to meet student’s needs as well as research needs of the whole college.
  • Introduction of Catia software at UAEU which helps students and faculty with Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing.
