2016 Critical Care Symposium
– Comprehensive Electrocardiography –

PROGRAM PURPOSE

Assist advanced nurse practitioners in critical care, emergency department, PACU, and anesthesia settings, as well as other health care providers to interpret EKGs and manage evidence of myocardial ischemia and/or infarction. In addition, lecture content will include critical assessment of conduction defects (bundle branch blocks, fascicular blocks), axis deviation, and hypertrophy. This conference will update healthcare providers with clinical data/research relevant to these content areas.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
Review the 12-lead EKG system, the normal morphology of the EKG waveforms, and options
for lead placement.
Define the criteria for assessing evidence of myocardial ischemia, injury, and infarction,
including the limitations of the EKG.
Describe the clinical applications of computerized ST segment analysis including configuring
Iso, J, and ST points on cardiac cycles as well as recognizing the potential for iatrogenic injury.
Review the configuration of chest leads, limb leads, modified chest leads, the derived 12 lead
(EASI system) as well as discuss variations available for EKG lead placement for ICU, surgical
and postoperative patients.
Review how to configure modified chest leads for true chest leads V1 and V5.
Recall the preferred EKG leads for detecting early signs of myocardial ischemia/injury.
Diagnose faculty-presented EKG rhythm strips and 12 Lead EKGs, reviewing the criteria by
which each was identified.
Describe the diagnostic criteria and clinical implications of shifts in the heart’s axis,
hypertrophy, bundle branch blocks, and fascicular blocks.
Clarify the material presented throughout the seminar through questions and answers and
discuss participants’ concerns for application in their own clinical settings.

Dr. Mark A. Kossick received his Doctor of Nursing Science degree in 2003 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center – Memphis, College of Nursing. He completed his clinical residency in the electrophysiology laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). During his residency he developed a new modified chest lead (MAC1L).  Dr. Kossick finished his anesthesia education in 1984 at Hamot Medical Center, Erie, ennsylvania/Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Over the past 25 years he has been on faculty at several universities (University of Kansas, UAB, University of Maryland, and Union University).

Dr. Kossick is married and the father of three daughters. He is currently on faculty as a tenured professor at Western Carolina University, in Asheville, North Carolina and serves as the Graduate Anesthesia Simulation Coordinator for the School of Nursing’s High Fidelity Anesthesia Simulation Lab. Over the past two decades he has lectured extensively across the country on ECG interpretation, including the management of ischemia and dysrhythmias, cardinal elements of recording ECG data, and medical legal issues. His lectures have addressed eclectic audiences (anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, hospitalists, emergency department physicians, critical care nurses, post-anesthesia care nurses) at state, national, and international meetings, medical centers, as well as students (undergraduate, graduate) and faculty as a visiting professor at other universities. He has lectured in London, United Kingdom, as well as Vienna, Austria, and was invited to present at the 4th Annual International Congress of Cardiology (2012) in Guangzhou, China. Dr. Kossick has also written a textbook and handbook on electrocardiography, is an author of two chapters in the textbook, Nurse Anesthesia (Inhalation Anesthetics and Clinical Monitoring I: Cardiovascular System), and authored the antiarrhythmic chapter in the textbook, Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesiology. His professional memberships have included Sigma Theta Tau International, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and International Society for Computerized Electrocardiology, and the International Association of Simulation in Healthcare. In 2006, Dr. Kossick was inducted into Ashtabula Harbor High School’s Hall of Fame as an alumni recipient of the “Career Achievement Award,” Ashtabula, Ohio.

His simulation experience is extensive and includes serving as the Director of Graduate Simulation Education for the Baptist Memorial Health Care Center of Excellence in Health Care Practice at Union University. This positon included developing high fidelity simulation curriculum for graduate anesthesia students as well as continuing education opportunities for nursing faculty and emergency medical service personnel. At both Union University and Western Carolina University Dr. Kossick developed architectural plans for the implementation of high fidelity simulation curriculum in operating rooms and anesthesia clinical skills labs. He continues to offer expertise in the development and delivery of high fidelity simulation practicum experiences at Western Carolina University for both graduate students and medical personnel within the community. In addition, he has also chaired graduate student research involving human patient simulation and the acquisition of physical assessment skills in nursing students.

In the past he has participated in medical mission work in Tatoxcac, Mexico, served as 1) a member of the AANA Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists, 2) chair of the AANA Education Committee, 3) an on-site reviewer for the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, 4) a reviewer for the AANA Journal, 5) member of the AANA Practice Committee, 6) an advanced education nursing grant reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions, 7) member of the AANA Foundation Research Committee, 8) a member of Union University’s IRB Committee and currently WCU’s IRB Committee as well as Mission Hospital’s Nursing Research Council, and 9) the Nurse Anesthesia Program Director at the University of Maryland and Union University in Jackson, TN. Dr. Kossick was also honored for his scholarly accomplishments and promoted to Senior Fellow by the President of Union University. He currently resides in Biltmore Lake, North Carolina.
