Voice Juries

Voice Juries

At the end of each semester, voice students must perform a jury.  The jury is the final exam in applied voice.  This performance is  a closed performance for the voice faculty only.  The total value of the jury is 25% of the final applied voice grade.

Typically, the student chooses the first piece and the faculty choose the rest.  All repertoire for a voice jury must be memorized.

Pianists:  Your pianist will be provided for your jury for a small accompanying fee. (See “accompanying fees” link).  No taped accompaniment of any kind is accepted.

Sign up sheet:  Students sign up for a jury time.  The sign up list will be posted on the bulletin board across from the School of Music office (Coulter Rm. 252) in a timely manner.  Students should confirm with their pianist that the jury time is mutually convenient.

Literature:  Specific literature for your juries is dependent upon 2 factors:  which degree plan you are in and what level of voice study you are taking (see voice requirements matrix link).  Your voice teacher will give you a variety of literature from the following musical periods, genres and languages:  baroque, classical, romantic, modern, Italian, German, French and English.  In addition, faculty may assign Spanish or Latin.  For those Musical Theatre majors, literature is chosen from: Operetta/Gilbert and Sullvian, Golden Age of Broadway, Rock musical, and/or post 1960”s.

Grading:  Grading for the jury is a numerical grade based upon a 100 point scale. The following areas are graded:  tone, intonation, diction, vocal technique, preparation/memory and interpretation/expression.  The grading document is placed in the student’s official file and serves to both document the progress of the student and the literature the student has studied.
