What Voice Number to Take When?

General Information about voice lessons:

  •  All students who study voice must register for voice lessons.
  • Voice lessons are given by voice faculty under the numbers listed below.
  • These numbers are repeated twice in each level – typically fall and spring.
  • No private voice lessons are given without an audition.

What Number to Take When:

  • MUS 105:  Preparatory Lessons – taken for the first semester of study.  MUS 105 is assigned based upon an entering audition which shows much potential, but is not up to entering freshman singing level.  The jury at the end of this semester is a barrier exam for continuation into the music major as a voice principal.  MUS 105 may not be repeated.
  • MUS 106:  BFA Music Theatre Majors – taken for the entire first year of study
  • MUS 106:  Music Minors – taken for the entire first year of study.
  • MUS 107:  Voice majors (BA, BMED, BM performance) – taken for the entire first year of voice study
  • MUS 206: BFA Music Theatre Majors – taken for the entire second year of study
  • MUS 206:  Music Minors – taken for the entire second year of study.  After MUS 206 for the 2nd time, the music minor voice requirement is completed.
  • MUS 207: Voice majors (BA, BMED, BM performance) – taken for the entire second year of voice study.  At the conclusion of the second semester of MUS 207, the student must perform a Sophomore Exam. This is generally performed in a regular voice jury.  This is the barrier exam for continuation to junior level voice.
  • MUS 306: BFA Music Theatre Majors – taken for the entire third year of study
  • MUS 307: Voice majors (BMED, BM performance) – taken for the entire third year of voice study
  • MUS 406: BFA Music Theatre Majors – taken for the entire fourth year of study
  • MUS 407: Voice majors (BM performance) – taken for the entire fourth year of voice study.

(BMED students take MUS 407 for one semester only in the fourth year.  The second semester is student teaching.)
